Backlinks from directories with strong metrics and relevance would help, just as would backlinks from any strong relevant site. So basically, directories are just another regular example of backlinks. Would you agree?
But are links from weak directories punished? I don't think it's always the case (opinion). It wouldn't always be the same as being busted for paid links
