How do you protect your forum from spam?

My method is asking people to spell a word backwards. It is quite effective but there could be obstacles in the future as bots become smarter.

One of the best ways to deal with forum spam is manually approving posts until the users reaches a certain number. For instance, you can put 25 posts under moderation and if the first 25 posts are good, you can then let the posts approve automatically.

I just wouldn't let them in to begin with.

How do you know someone is a spammer without them posting on your forum. Well, some email looks suspicious but you cannot determine someone is a spammer or not if they are using trusted email provider.

Most can be stopped at registration, not all.
