SEO is not really hard if you don’t have money it’s a time game with dedication and consistency. If you have money this could still fail if you don’t offer something the consumer wants.

About 30 pages are indexed on Google for my message board, and I've only received one click in the last 30 days. With that being said, I think it's harder than it used to be to find an audience using SEO.

This doesn't help at all, you have to build backlinks to your keywords. If you don't, you won't rank for said keywords.

Yeah, the way mentioned in the first quote might have worked in the very early days of SEO.

You're right. The web has advanced so much over the years with a lot more competition that it takes a lot more work to rank these days, especially with user intent.

A mixture of backlinks from social media, forum signatures, directories and blogs can help you rank well though. Along with reddit.

I got one site which has more SEO promise present. I'm wondering how to get it over the top. It currently needs it's SEO power tripled, but my other ones need to be quadrupled.
