What are some pros and cons of either choice, free or paid? What have you tried or thought about trying?

Running a forum costs money, apart from domain and hosting, you might also have to spend money on marketing and content building. When you use free software, you save money, running on premium software will consume a lot of money.

Well, in regard to TapaTalk, for instance, the free version has too many ads.
