Unlike forum posts. I manually approve blog comments, but it would be better if someone could just post with no stuff in the way.
But I don't know of ways to modify user registration, but I suppose a mod exists.

Unless you allow registrations and post article without approval, you don't get spam posts on your blog. However, if your blog is open for commenting, you will get a lot of spam comments. The only way to control this is by approving it manually. There are also plugins that prevents from spam commenting.

I use both manual verification and plugin to sort them out. It does not require too much work to keep the comments section clean.
